In some towns in ...LRT doesn't need much space. In some towns in Europe they trundle along very close to sidewalks with no issues. I think projected ridership was the issue here. As with most mid-sized towns the downtown is not heavily populated - hence the kibosh. <br /><br />It does seem as if Brampton get;s shafted a lot on transit. Their GO service is minimal. That road is way too narrow for them to even consider building an LRT.<br /><br />Picture Highway 2 through Whitby downtown: essentially 1 lane in each direction and some parking along the sides. Add in a narrower sidewalk than in Whitby? Not possible.<br /><br />If they were going to do this, the only way would be to create several blocks of just a pedestrian way (a la Stephen Ave in Calgary) and divert cars to the surrounding roads.
