so they're checking tickets on my train and this guy just booked it for the washroom. slams the door.

ok. transit officer knocks on door. guy starts moaning. i'm in the quad across from it. the ones the size of a broom closet

transit officer radios to his associate. speaks so quietly can't hear what he said.

he's just standing there. knocks again. says he's checking tickets. guy in bathroom says, hey, i'm trying to take a shit here

officer says he'll wait. me too, i think

it's about 15 minutes and the transit officer is sitting down

okay, now we're pulling into union and his buddy joins us. he starts speaking to the guy in the washroom telling him they're waiting.

guy in washroom says nothing.

it's getting tense.

can he stay in there all day? can they break down the door?

officer asks him if he's ok

guy says he's shitting and to leave him alone

officer says train is out of service so it's time to come out

i'm thinking wow, all this to avoid a fare inspection unless he ligitimately had to shit?

sorry cj, can't stick around to see how this plays out as i need to get off the train but i suspect these guys are going to wait for as long as it takes

you'd think they mounties or somethin!

They should have just kept quiet before getting to Union and waited for him to come out. The look on his face would have been priceless.

Sounds like GO hired Benton Fraser from Due South.

"Ticket please, thank you kindly."

At that point, they can't just walk away. It now becomes a matter of eventually opening the door to check on his "well being". If it turns out he has no ticket, he won't just face a fine but possibly a charge for "obstruct peace officer" In other words, he's "arrestable". Looks good on him if that happens. People who don't pay are part of the reason the fares go up.

I disagree - fares go up because they know they can justify gouging us.
And can GO "cops" really arrest someone?

Apparently so...

To ensure the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, Transit Safety Officers are designated as “Special Constables” through a sponsorship program with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Officers are authorized to enforce GO Transit By-laws, which govern passenger conduct, fare inspection and use of our facilities. Officers are also authorized to enforce the following statutes:

The Criminal Code
Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
Youth Criminal Justice Act
Trespass to Property Act
Liquor License Act
Sections 17, 28, 33 of the Mental Health Act
Safe Streets Act

I've seen this exact scene play out before. Three transit cops waited outside the washroom between Union and Pickering and eventually used their key to open it up. The guy went so far as to drop his drawers for show and tried to tell them his friend upstairs had his ticket. They ended up going to get the friend who had to talk the guy out of the washroom so they could toss him off the train and give him a ticket. It was pretty amusing to watch.

Anonymous and Al are right.
They can arrest people. That would be why they carry handcuffs.

Sorry guys. I had to get to work but when I left the train the two transit dudes were still talking to the shitter thru the door.
