The problem for these commuters is with midday and evening service: previously, commuters had the option of taking a single bus direct from Union to all points north of Unionville GO Station.
Now, there's no longer bus service between Union and Unionville at those times.
That forces people travelling to and from stations north of Unionville to take a train and bus combination, which some say some adds up to an hour to their commute.

This time last year, there were buses every half hour from Markham to Union, running 10am to midnight, and that took 50 minutes in the middle of the day.
Now, there's a bus+train combo that leaves Markham every hour during the middle of the day (connecting to a train in Unionville), taking 1 hour 14 minutes in total. Of that, 15 minutes is the connection time between the bus arriving and the train departing.
So 25 minutes extra... so I think the "extra hour" for her commute means the daily total.
(As an aside: the direct buses from Unionville to Union took 35 minutes last year, vs. 41 for the train today)
I believe this is just part of GO TRANSIT's plan to improve the optics of implementing their upcoming Dumbtrack plan (i.e. the Stouffville line becomes useless for long distance commuters when this line is reduced to a surrogate subway route for Toronto commuters). It will be easier to sell it this way.
One such example is the added delay of their so-called TTC-GO Transit sticker pilot project. It's a disaster and should have been scrapped 6 months into the program but at least it helps adds 5-6 additional minutes to our commute.
