Smoakville - where everybody is woefully stupid

subject:Smoakville Chronicles

Making the transfer today in Oakville - city of German Imported Cars and Super Inflated Entitlement.
Let the pics tell some of the story:

Smoakville 1 - A nicely composed shot - note the young smoking couple under the two conveniently placed no smoking signs. Nothing new here, really. Approached to a safe distance (not easy since they were upwind) and asked if the signs meant something different to them.
They had the good grace to leave right away - though snickering.
Smoakville 2 As they passed I noticed the other two - Mr. Big Boy Pants, and a guy who looks like he still thinks he could land a spot with the 1990's Bare Naked Ladies.
I ask them to please comply with the GO no smoking policy. Mr. Bare Naked Manque responds that the law says that he has to be more than 15 feet away from the doors. This is wrong.
He's on GO property, and if it were adequately explained by the signage (it isn't - and why is that?) he'd know (or have no way of denying) that he has no right to smoke on GO property.
He's also closer than 15 feet to the entrance, but hey, he can only be so wrong before he's over 100% wrong - am I right?
Smoakville 3: So I'm snapping pics and his little friend (they're in Blue Jays matching outfits! SQUEE!), Mr. Big Boy Pants, offers to break my "fucking camera". So I turn on the video feature and ask him to approach and repeat. Strangely enough, he demurs.
As my local bus is leaving I note that several more smokers have taken up the perch between the no-smoking signs and the PRESTO machine.
For the 1,250th time - howzabout a sign that clearly explains that there is no smoking on GO property and what that means in terms of geography and possible penalties?
When they're smoking right under your signs as they are now, and right by the PRESTO machine, I 'd say its safe to conclude that the GO safety and comfort of passengers commitment beyond being a travesty and is in the neighbourhood of being a willful lie.

Addendum: GO YANKEES!

If there were an altercation, who would be arrested for "violating" whose "rights"?
Whose side would the cops be on? (Hmm-m-m-m-m-m-m-mmmm)

GO should have patrols.
Or when the GO cops arrive in their GO cars to randomly board the train, to check tickets they should tell the people they'll be fined for Smoking on GO property.

Never happen, Just like your Quiet Zone, no one from GO will enforce these Laws? Signs? or is it just Art?
As for the Smoking, you seen the amount of Drivers that Smoke by their Bus? some still smoke in it (Fact!)

For the 1,251st time, howzabout some TSO presence with a HRPS paddy-wagon as backup to take these bozos downtown for "a little chat" — let's say a 90-minute information session — then release them. That should inject some inconvenience into their day.

From experience I'd say that the HRPS, Halton Health, GO Transit Enforcement, GO Transit Customer Service, VIA, and Oakville Transit all have their ducks in a row. Call any one with a complaint about smoking at Oakville station and you will be sent off on a whirlwind circle-tour of any number of the above listed worthy agencies.
The routine is th esame "Oh, that is terrible and we do take such complaints very seriously - but you 'd better talk to _______"

They have a shared commitment to passing the buck on customer comfort and safety.
The longest circle tour of referral I did was five separate agencies in one day...

"In a study spanning 16 U.S. cities, the U.S. Department of Energy researchers placed monitors on nonsmoking bartenders and waiters who worked in smoke-filled bars and restaurants to measure the amount of environmental tobacco. The conclusion was that the monitors detected minuscule amounts of tobacco products. (Jenkins, et al, 1999) The harm that might come from such minuscule amounts of exposure was calculated as “none” to “improbable harm”. "

And that's INDOORS.

Because coming home smelling like an ashtray was so great?
I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. Got the asthma and paperwork to prove it.

Tobacco residue is the least of it. Particulates in cigarette smoke that provoke allergic reaction and deleterious health effects are plentiful and persistent.

I see your one study and raise you 50 years of CDC research.

There is no controversy - other than Koch funded massaged "science". The evidence is clear and documented.

Health Effects in Adults
In adults who have never smoked, secondhand smoke can cause:

Heart disease
For nonsmokers, breathing secondhand smoke has immediate harmful effects on the heart and blood vessels.1,3
It is estimated that secondhand smoke caused nearly 34,000 heart disease deaths each year during 2005–2009 among adult nonsmokers in the United States.1
Lung cancer1,7
Secondhand smoke exposure caused more than 7,300 lung cancer deaths each year during 2005–2009 among adult nonsmokers in the United States.1
Stroke1
Smokefree laws can reduce the risk for heart disease and lung cancer among nonsmokers.1

@anon 7:13 - It absolutely blows my mind that people like you still exist thinking second hand smoke is harmless. Whatever helps you sleep at night right??

Well, how about you try telling that to my dead grandmother who never smoked a cigarette her entire life, but her husband and 3 of here children did. Wanna know what she died from? Lung Cancer. Her body was donated to science and after examining her lungs, they were convinced she was a smoker.

So you can take that "study" and shove it up your you know what.

It doesn't matter whether second-hand smoke is harmful or not - the rules are clear, and there so we don't have to suffer from the stink. It's the same as the train or bus.

Not fair to judge the entire city of Oakville :( I live there (barely - 3 years ago we moved from Mississauga over the border into Oakville by a block to better school district). I joke about it too but this writer seems to seriously lump all of is into one boat of german cars and entitlement. I drive a 2007 Ford Escape that was my first vehicle ever at the age of 29 and have no entitlement issues. Maybe those who grew up in Oakville??? (ha ha - kidding)
