So... just how BIG is this rat colony that has moved out of Union Station?

NOBODY KNOWS.

NO ONE.
And it's not a colony but a population. A POPULATION!

More from the Toronto Star
Abell Pest Control says construction at Union Station ‘has displaced a large rat colony.’

Downtown business owners are bracing for a rat infestation after a pest control company warned that “the demolition and construction of several underground structures at Union Station has displaced a large rat colony, forcing its migration to new areas of the downtown.”

But the exact location and size of the rat colony remain a mystery along with other facts about the alleged rats.

Some highlights:

Where in the station were they living?
Nobody knows. Rats are common in any city, especially in underground areas like subways. Since Abell doesn’t service Union, none of its workers have gone in to look for rats, Heimbach said.

Where are the rats going?
No one really knows. Heimbach said the station rats are pushing out other rats in the area, which in turn causes those rats to spread out through the city. As well, since it’s getting colder, more rats will try to get indoors.

Did you read that? NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING.

Burn it down. Just burn it.

I knew about the mice (in fact, almost had to buy new sneakers as had I stepped faster one would have met his maker that morning), but not the rats. Shudder. Plus, I thought rats and mice didn't populate the same areas as they are competing species.

One of the many things I miss about Alberta is that it is rat-free. The odd time a sighting happens, they are pretty darn quick to eradicate the threat.

Oh come on have a heart...is no one here a fan of the old Disney movie "The Secret Of Nimh?"

If any of the rats happen to get on the GO Train with anyone, my guess is they may have better manners than most GO Train passengers.

I saw a dead one awhile ago...it was by the new stairs going up ti Bay street. Had to do a double take, thought it was a dead cat it was so big.

Last Sunday morning I was walking north on Bay towards Union when a rat ran by heading north in front of the ACC.

It was in a hurry too because it was really moving. I wonder if it was racing home to check on the wife and kids?

No doubt it's due to the new subterranean concourse that's being built. Did you know there's going to be a concourse at Union lower than where we walk now?

Hope I'm still commuting downtown when it's all finished but I fear I might be retired before then.

Hmm - this was in the news because of a press release from a pest control company - I'm sure the city could pay them to fix the problem. What a good idea

Wait till the moving walls of cockroaches get "displaced"

You should see the rats down by Redpath. I used to work close by and at night I thought there seemed to be a lot of cats around - until I saw the ringed tails. They grown em big on sugar and water.

My husband & I saw a rat one morning in the area between Union Station GO concourse & the subway station, just beyond the fenced-off area. This was a couple of years ago, but the big dig was already well under way.

We also saw a mouse scurrying down the aisle of an empty train car at Union Station one day. We went to another car. Hopefully he found his way out before it started filling up with people...!

I saw a big black rat yesterday morning as I got off the train at Union. Right by the elevator on Platform 5. Thankfully he was on the other side of the construction barriers.

I managed to keep my panic to myself but at the same time thought it rather humourous that I had just read this story - and bam! there's a rat.
