The horrible rage you feel towards anyone munching celery, an apple or carrots on the train is a legit medical condition

Do you feel vindicated?

My husband can't eat an apple near me. The sound makes me want to karate chop him in the the throat. This weekend we discovered there is a name for this rage - Misophonia.

Misophonia means "hatred of sound." I know, it's not hatred of people which many of you feel some days towards fellow commuters.

According to the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, sufferers of misophonia have feelings of disgust, anger, or frustration brought on by certain sounds. The AMC describes the reviled sounds as typically innocent ones like chewing or heavy breathing.

This website explains more AND has videos of the sounds of people chewing the foods that drive others crazy.

HAPPY MONDAY!

It's not so much the eating of different foods, it is the sound of eating itself. Gums flapping, spittle flying, lips not touching, mastication period.

That is the grossest part.

I have moved my lunch time at work so that I don't have to listen to a group of coworkers that SLURP EVERYTHING... liquid, solid, doesn't matter... slurp, slurp, slurp (I was told it was a cultural thing).

It turns my stomach more than it makes me angry.

I don't mind noisy food, just noisy chewers. People who eat with their mouths open, or smack and snap gum, make me want to punch then in the face. Really. I feel absolutely violent. I have to move away.

And scraping your teeth on your fork. Theese two things are deep rooted in my childhood.

And dragging the heels of your shoes. Why? Pick up your damn feet!

Heavy breathing (outside of the expected from exercise) also irritates me but not as much as chewing with your mouth open.

Nice to know I am not alone!

On that happy note, I am going to go and eat my apple now ;)

I can't stand the sound of people cracking their bones, ie fingers, neck, etc.

Gum snapping sends me into a near postal rage.

I've stopped eating with certain friends (all of whom are NOT white) who do this.
It's a cultural thing, according to one of our other friends, who is also of the same culture, but has learned better manners.

They just don't understand that chewing with their mouths open, is gross and inconsiderate.

OH well.
