I guess it will take more then a bus driver to make the designated smoking area a success at Oshawa GO

I will tell you all, people are PISSED this actually happened. I won't publish all the comments because some of them are too profane, some of them are mean (people are blaming me for not taking a stronger stance - like I tell Metrolinx what they can and can't do!?) and some are just so poorly written I won't subject you to this butchering of the English language. It makes me weep.

Yesterday I had high hopes the smokers would corral themselves into the mercy (I really want to say f--k here but I promised my mom, and all her friends that now that I'm a Z-list celebrity transit blogger, I'd watch my language) pen given to them at Oshawa to butt-suck in but alas, the anarchy is strong.

This morning, I exited my DRT bus and passed several smokers puffing away right under NO SMOKING signs posted at the bus loop. I politely informed all of them of the designated smoking area is now open which one smoker glanced at in disdain. "Really," said said sarcastically. "I'm not 12".

One smoker told me he planned on complaining as he found it offensive he was being singled out and forced to stand in an area not convenient for him since his bus loads several metres down the platform.

Poor baby.

The sense of entitlement is strong with some people and nothing anyone says or does will change it; it only pisses them off further and make them more obnoxious.

You are *way* more than a Z-list celebrity transit blogger. Don't kid yourself.

You try to accommodate everybody the best way you can ...

This is what society is all about: making zebras and rabbits share the same space with the lions and wolves.

I was surprised to see another new smoking area *on* the Oshawa train platforms at the far West end in front of the doors of the second car this morning.

ON THE ACTUAL PLATFORM?!

It always starts this way when someone tries to get a group to change its habits. There's resistance, often extreme; but with constant pressure (AND ACTUAL ENFORCEMENT- I'm looking at you GO Transit), the change will happen. Slowly and painfully, but it will happen. In a few years smoking on platforms will be as impossible to imagine as smoking in restaurants. You'll see. Don't give up hope :)

Yep, on the actual platform! I didn't have my phone with me so couldn't take a photo but it's there. Insane.

Bus shelters, transit terminals, train platforms, hospital property... It doesn't matter where there is a "no smoking" sign. Some smokers will always feel entitled to smoke wherever the hell they want. "Smokers rights". Ha. It's a joke. There is no RIGHT to smoke.

As an FYI: I had to tell some ass that there is No Smoking on Union Station Platform 24. Yes, it is "outside" but it is still illegal.

I shouldn't have to recite the Smoke-Free Ontario Act to tell some ass to not smoke.
