Guess the hotels were full

SUBMITTED

Earlier today I was riding the TTC's Bloor-Danforth subway line from Victoria Park to Bathurst when I saw this guy lying down on three seats and putting his suitcase on two other seats. As if hogging FIVE seats wasn't bad enough, the three seats he was lying across were the blue seats reserved for the elderly, handicapped, and pregnant women.

Metrolinx announces TTC's aging fleet of streetcars now PRESTO-enabled

TORONTO -- The PRESTO rollout on the TTC continues as dozens of new fare card readers are being brought online aboard legacy streetcars.

Following rigorous testing, PRESTO devices are now live on more than 100 of the TTC’s legacy streetcar fleet, with the remaining streetcars coming online by the end of this year.

Work continues to expand PRESTO across the entire TTC network by the end of 2016, with a new, modern TTC fare gate with integrated PRESTO payment to be tested in the first quarter of next year. Once the trial is complete, the fare gates will be installed in the 43 TTC subway stations that are not yet PRESTO-enabled by the end of the year. PRESTO installation and testing will also begin on the TTC’s bus and Wheel-Trans fleets in 2016.

When PRESTO is fully deployed, there will be more than 10,000 electronic fare payment devices in surface vehicles and subway stations to provide the 1.7 million people who ride the TTC each weekday with a modern, fast and convenient way to pay for transit.

Instagram account posting photos of women on TTC raising consent concerns

From Metro

A new Instagram account is posting photos of women on the TTC, raising concerns about consent and the safety of female riders.

The account, called TTC Women (@ttcwomen), claims to post pictures of  “beautiful women seen on the TTC … for the sake of fun and beauty.”

An Open Letter to a TTC fare inspector

from Reddit

So, this morning I was on a 502 westbound streetcar and a fare inspector got on. Many people who paid with cash or a token and had no plans to transfer to another route didn't have transfers, therefore didn't have the proof they paid. The inspector was not fining anyone, nor kicking them off the streetcar. When he came across someone without proof, he just warned them about the upcoming changes and told them even if they aren't transferring it is good to take a transfer anyway just for proof of payment so they don't risk being fined. Yes, this seems redundant for riders to do who aren't making transfers, but I don't feel it's too much to ask to just grab a transfer. It's certainly much preferable to get a transfer than to pay the fine.

Anyway, so there was probably 50 people on the streetcar and everyone nicely and politely showed their pass/transfer and those who didn't have a transfer politely said they understood and from now on will get a transfer. Well, everyone was nice and polite, except one guy who decided he was far too important to be bothered by the fare inspector. He started yelling at him, telling him his job is worthless and he is even more worthless for taking such a job that wastes resources. He said he is not happy that part of his fare is going to this inspector's pay cheques and he is garbage for fining people. He said he has been taking the TTC for 40 years and he doesn't deserve this kind of treatment, as if he was the only person asked to show his fare, and as if he was being asked to prove he didn't commit a murder or something. The inspector stayed very calm and professional and tried telling him he was just giving out warnings for when the program really starts rolling out. The inspector told this overreacting jerk (my words, not the fare inspector's) a few people didn't have proof and he wasn't fining them nor kicking them off the vehicle, he just warning them for the future. Well the guy kept freaking out and people started telling him if this bothers him so much he is free to find other methods of transportation to work, and that this inspector didn't make these rules, he is just employed to enforce them, which he wasn't even doing, he was just warning people about the POP program rolling out on all vehicles.

In the end, the dick had a metropass and could have just showed it to the fare inspector, rolled his eyes about the situation he doesn't agree with, stay silent and carry on with his day. But no, he had to make a spectacle of himself and personally insult a young man just doing the job the TTC is paying him to do, and doing it both professionally and politely. I just couldn't understand what he thought he would be achieving in doing this. He was a 50-60 year old man who was yelling at a guy who looked maybe 25 who probably just got this job a few days ago and has no pull with how the TTC is managed.

So, to that fare inspector, I'm sorry one guy was a dick to you. You are not worthless and you are not garbage, you are just doing the job you are employed to do so you can make a living, just as I do mine. And I commend you for being so polite and professional, because I likely would not have been able to keep it together like you did.

To other riders, you may feel similar to this man, but there is no reason to act in the manner this guy acted. Fare inspectors are just doing their job, they didn't make the rules, they are just enforcing these rules. They need a job just as you and I need a job to make rent or mortgage payments, buy groceries, provide for our loved ones and so on. Don't be a dick like this guy, just show your pass/transfer and go on with your day, even if you don't agree.

To that guy, if you see this, you should be completely ashamed of the childish way you reacted.

TL;DR: fare inspector came on the streetcar simply warning people to get transfers in the future even if they don't need it as the proof of payment program is rolling out on all routes. One guy took exception to being asked to show his pass and even though he had a metropass he continued to insult and berate the fare inspector, who was nothing but polite and professional in return. Don't be that guy, just show your pass/transfer and go on with your day.

I like this guy. Metrolinx should woo him for the next president of GO Transit

I love the fact that the TTCs Andy Byford is a diehard, true commuter and is unafraid of the paying public he represents.

Kind of like how former GO Transit president Gary McNeil was. Mr. McNeil would personally answer emails from me. I have yet to receive a personal email from Greg Percy. I've gotten emails from people who write on his behalf but not one addressed directly from him to me or to any of the people who have written to him and cc'd me.

I know GO Transit has passenger advisory committees made up of passengers selected from the ridership - passengers who applied to be on the committee. I am sure that these fellow riders communicate issues to the people who lead these advisory meetings, but does Mr. Percy himself attend these meetings?

TTC boss Andy Byford gets rough ride from passengers on subway

A woman who recognized him on the subway congratulated Andy Byford on his bravery in riding the TTC to the North York Civic Centre on Tuesday. The transit CEO, who wears his TTC name tag pinned to the outside of his coat whenever he rides the system, has taken a pasting from riders during this most…

Despite its shortcomings, Toronto has one of the best-integrated transit systems in the world

Some highlights from the article:

TTC staff showed (city council) how interconnected Toronto’s commute had become.

For example:
  • More than 10 per cent of TTC riders start their day on a streetcar, before transferring to a bus or subway. And 6 per cent of them use streetcar only.
  • The 504 streetcar carries more passengers than all of Edmonton transit, all GO buses. And, more than the Sheppard subway.
  • More than a third of TTC riders never see the subway, completing their commute on buses or streetcars. That’s 562,000 people a day.
Untangling the realities of the daily commuting slog: James
From the Toronto Star

A recent poll has half of us admitting that we get to work late quite often. The Commute is a convenient scapegoat. The Commute could mean the ride, the journey, the traffic, the highway pileup, the subway delay, the bus wait, the time it takes to get from point A to B, the experience, the cost.…

Old beagle mix on TTC brightened my day

According to the owner, he just turned 13. He was so sweet. Wagged his tail at everyone. All the passengers were smiling, including me. Thanks old beagle mix. You made me feel less angry.

BlogTO.com asks, "What's the most annoying TTC rider behaviour?"

What constitutes the most annoying rider behaviour on the TTC is not as easy to determine as one might think. Ultimately, there's just too many egregious violations of basic etiquette to choose from. What's worse, after all, having a high school kid with an enormous book-filled backpack continuously bump into you or being tucked into a two-seater on a packed train with someone who hasn't showered in days?

I should smack that entitlement right off your face

I had the honour of riding into work on the TTC subway this morning.

At Spadina, these two elderly ladies got on the train and three young high school lads got up and offered the bench seats to them. The ladies sat and did not acknowledge the courtesy bestowed - no thank you, no nod, no smile. They just continued with their conversation.

I was sitting in an inside seat and gave it a minute or so. I couldn't hold my tongue any longer. I leaned forward and said, "Don't you think you should thank those young men for their courteous act considering most people today don't think to do that?"

One of the ladies said, "No, because it's expected. That's what they're supposed to do." And then she went back to her conversation.

I wanted to kick her. But I didn't. Because I don't like jail.

Snortin' Tims

Really?! Really.

Really?

Let's look at the layout of Union Station, in the perimeter of where all y'all dirty turnips spill out from the stairs and into the station, and how much coffee is available.

There's a:

Second Cup
Michel's Baguette
The Pretzel Thingy kiosk
Bagel Stop
Second Cup (again!)
McDonalds
Cinnabon
Mr Sub
The muffin place with way too many M's
That other croissant and pastry kiosk 'round where the LCBO is

And now there's a Tim Hortons or "Snortin' Tim's" as I call it. The line-up when I got off the train this morning was almost out the door to the TTC entrance.

Dudes, is the coffee *that* great?

Considering a kiosk the size of a coffin can generate such a line-up, imagine if the company ever brought these (mocked up in the photo below by yours truly) to the financial district:

What song would be playing if Tim Hortons coffee trucks existed? Write your suggestions in the comments.
