Sometimes a situation calls for some amputation

Char L'Hottie: This is a new type of rude - lady sitting down has legs stretched out under seat in front of her - I sit down, to the side, to u know, give her a chance to move her legs so I can face forward - what do u think she did - a wild guess- her DAMN legs are still there - wtf?

Cj smith: Tell her I have a message for her

Cj smith: Be sure to show her your phone

Cj smith: MOVE YOUR LEGS, THE SPACE IS TO BE SHARED!

Cj smith: Dammit, ask her for her cell

Cj smith: I'm gonna call her

Char L'Hottie: Lol, no ... thanks mom... Lol

Cj smith: I'm serious, ask that cow for her cell, tell her u have some furniture being delivered and u have no reception right now, call me and then I'll call back so she answers

Cj smith: Do it.

Cj smith: Wait. Actually, turn and kick her legs

Char L'Hottie: ur crazy

Cj smith: :D

Char L'Hottie: She moved them finally - u are way too funny

Char L'Hottie: Wait she put them back, I don't know what is worse this or homer!!!

Cj smith: I was about to email u a pic of an amputee where u could show it to her and then make a slicing motion across your throat

Char L'Hottie: I just burst out laughing from that - too funny

Cj smith: hip_extension.jpg ( 11.17 KB )

Cj smith: Just show it and give her a knowing look

I'm sorry. Where did you say the emergency strip was again?

That's a lot of signage. It also looks like every sticker glows in the dark. Clearly, someone doesn't understand that less is more.

I'm sorry this post wasn't more exciting. No, really. I am.

Hello Clarisse

For you germaphobe commuters, since allergy season is upon us, many of you may confuse us allergy-sufferers with those carrying the bubonic plague. These custom-made masks might be what you're looking for.

UPDATE
You're moving now but you're delayed 30 minutes
I was laid up sick today with the stomach flu my daughter gifted to me over the weekend.

I'm not a Crackberry addict, yet, but as I lay on the bathroom floor on my comfy Ralph Lauren shag bath rug, I am disturbed to learn that thousands of you may have to find a way to get to Danforth GO station if you want to make it home on the Stouffville and Oshawa corridors, or you can choose to hang out at Union. Apparently a hydro pole has fallen/leaning across the track.

If I were in the city, this would be one time where I would help my fellow lunatics. Those I know and have cell numbers for, I would band us together and request a minivan cab and somehow we'd get to Eglinton, by-passing Danforth all together.

So, how's everyone handling the situation? I haven't seen any mention of shuttle buses.

Hopefully the hydro pole is moved shortly. Maybe now would be a good time for GO Transit to request that the remaining hydro poles be inspected? Just a thought.

As promised, the story about the baked beans

Beans aren't a food I consume on a regular basis. In fact, prior to one fateful day in September 2010, the last time I had eaten beans in any form must have been when I was a kid and my dad, in a desperate attempt at dinner, hustled over to the Safeway and purchased two cans of Heinz Baked Beans and served it to myself and my sisters on bread. I don't remember anything spectacular happening later that night other than watching yet another awesome episode of MacGuyver.

My company is very active in the United Way. We host fundraisers. One type of fundraiser that I particularly enjoy is our annual potluck affair. One of the items on the menu that year was pulled pork with baked beans. I love pulled pork but I wasn't keen on the beans.

I was encouraged to try them. Apparently my co-worker who makes the beans knows a thing or two about southern style baked beans and they're to die for.

Oddly enough, the last part of that sentence wasn't a stretch. They were indeed delicious but what those beans did to me in the hours afterward makes me break out into a cold sweat just thinking about it.

The bloating happened first. I was at my desk and my stomach felt like a hot air balloon. Those of you who understand the science of hot air balloons also understand that the gas that goes in also has to come out. This is true of people who consume two cups of baked beans... or was it three?

In approximately 20 minutes from when the first cramp hit me, I was scheduled for a meeting with three other colleagues. The first cramp had me bowled over in agony. I got up and shut my door and prayed to the Christmas baby Jesus for relief. I had no idea how to make myself fart on command, so I did some squats. When that didn't work, I did some lunges. When that didn't work, I decided to go for a walk. Someone told me once that dogs poop faster if you walk them around the block rather than let them roam in the backyard. Seeing as "roaming" in my office wasn't helping, I went for a walk around the office.

With my ass cheeks clenched in fury, I strolled down one corridor and over to another. At the sign of the first feeling of escape, I Ben Johnson'd it back to my office and almost cried from the relief.

There was no way I was going to be able to sit through this meeting, I thought at the time. The cramping and bloating had me in so much pain, I just wanted to buy some Bean-O and go home. As luck would have it, just as I was figuring out a way to bail out of the meeting without having to disclose my bowel symptoms, I received word that the chair of the meeting couldn't make it. This allowed me to leave the office and head home.

I purchased some Bean-O at the PharmaPlus in the Path and gobbled down at least three tablets while walking the rest of the way to Union.

Once on the train - a very packed 4:53pm train - I was hit with another round of cramps. I also was sitting in a window seat. I hardly ever sit near the window. I don't know what I was thinking! I can tell you that holding in flatulence is incredibly painful. It can also make you nauseous and pale. It makes you sweaty and light-headed. It makes you pray.

Never in my life have I pressed my ass so tight into a seat. I had been pushing with so much force in an attempt to stave off you know what, that my ass, legs and thighs fell asleep by the time we reached Rouge Hill. I gripped the straps of my bags so tight, I left imprints of the embossing in my fingers. At Pickering, several people got off and at the last second, I made a decision to bolt off the train too. Well, I didn't actually bolt off the train. I did that slow, robotic walk we do when half our body is asleep.

I stood on the platform, at the very end of the platform, and made peace with the beans. When the next train showed up, I hopped on, confident I could make it to Oshawa. I hid out in the bathroom for the ride so I could have some privacy.

It took nearly until 1 am that very night for my body to return to normal. I've been told by my husband that my experience now makes me a weapon and that if I ever wanted to extol revenge on a train, all I need to do is requisition my co-worker's recipe, bake up a batch of her beans and let it rip.

Should commuters expect more? Or should commuters be part of the solution to make the ride pleasant for everyone?

subject If people don't like it, buy us better trains

Hello,
I've been reading with interest your blog and your beef with people who block the doors or put their feet up to relax after a long day of work at the office.
I've been riding GO Transit for a few months now and I don't understand why you're so concerned about what people do on a train.
Who cares?
Perhaps if GO Transit were to purchase trains, or put into service trains that have a better layout, more places to stand, baggage compartments and seats that only face forward, a lot of these problems would disappear.
How about you be more pro-active? Start a petition. Lobby the government to buy better trains to replace the archaic ones in service at the moment.
You can't change the public.
But you can change the system.

Thank you.

subject Re: If people don't like it, buy us better trains

Hi Carey,

Should GO reward bad behaviour?
Hells no.

If GO were to replace their rail fleet with trains similar to what commuters enjoy in Europe, specifically ones used in Italy, the cost would be enormous.

It would be nice but I don't think it's affordable. You know that highway we have in the GTA, the 407? That money would have been better spent building a LRT to service the 905 and improve existing commuter rail routes, such as adding more track/trains/stops - just my opinion.

Ticket prices would be double if GO used the trains you want. Heck, if you want everything you've suggested, why not take VIA into Toronto everyday because that's how much a ticket would cost on GO. Why even have a GO rail system? Maybe VIA should expand. They already have the trains you like although you do realize that to make trains more spacious for standing, there wouldn't be any seats.

Commuter-rail systems are designed how they are, I think, to keep costs affordable for people who choose to leave their cars at home. I never associated the word luxury with commuter. That's more a travel concept. When I ride the train into work, I'm not traveling for a day out in the city. I'm going to work.

But I do wonder why GO trains are set up with seats that face each other. I wonder what the logic was in the design. Perhaps it was to encourage us all to be friendly with one another.

Hey! There's a concept. Courtesy and friendliness. Why does it seem so odd to you that I, along with others, expect this?

The verbal smackdown was system-wide

Before I get into the topic of this post, I just want to mention that an inquiring public wants to know why I've made myself so accessible at the mercy of this blog.

Content is king when it comes to a blog and if you want to be a successful blogger, you need your blog to be current (updated) or else your blog is just another blog in the graveyard of blogs in cyberspace.

I know that many readers are heavily fire-walled at work and read the site on smartphones or can't access certain features, such as comments, so I try to provide as many methods as I can to talk to me. I've posted comments for readers. It's fantastic customer service, don't you think?

The only complaint I've received is that I don't have a twitter feed. If I had a twitter feed, I wouldn't need a blog. I also don't have a Facebook page. To me, that would be twice the work and I already do this once for free as it is.

Friday, I asked how many people heard the verbal smackdown GO Transit issued to remind people to keep their feet on the floor and belongings off the seats. This notice was read on every corridor. Do I sound obsessed with this topic? Have you read my laces-out post?

What GO Transit needs to do is take my favorite amputee and make those stickers larger than the new accessibility stickers they've been raving about and put them on the windows of every coach, a la Ray Finkle.

Hi CJ.
Just wanted to share with you my train story of the day. I'm a student. I just so happen to have a cold but needed to go in to pick up an exam, and don't usually miss school for colds, I pay for it. So I figure I'll be courteous, because I know how much people hate sick people on the train, so I'm sitting on the floor ... Out of the way ... see pic.
The "Cold Warden" (pictured above) will not stop giving me dirty looks every time I blow my nose even though I'm sanitizing every time!!! She's letting out loud sighs and shaking her head. Just wondering what your take is on this??? Am I wrong to be on the train???

No, you're not wrong for going about your business. You have a cold. People with issues need to breathe through tissues is what I say. Solution? Carry around some surgical masks that you can get for free from any walk-in clinic and hand them out to people who can't deal with your compromised immune system. Some people need to get over themselves.
Hope you feel better.

Super Jesus don't need no stinking rules

Re: Feet off the seats

Super Jesus had his foot up today and took his foot down a few seconds after the announcement was made. It lasted about half a minute and the foot went right back on the seat.

Repost: Attention foot riders

There's a reason why the dude illustrated in that sign is an amputee from the ankles up.

Learn from his mistake.

PS. A few of you already know that I didn't ride in today but I received a dozen or so emails and comments that GO Transit circulated, or issued, a memo to CSAs on the LSW and LSE corridors asking them to address the foot riders and bag riders. The announcements were made during this morning's rush hour.

I'd like to hear from the Georgetown, Barrie and Stouffville jokers. Were you given the same directives? If it's not clear what's being asked, refer to the graphic above.

Hello. I am one of those park donkeys asspeople you have photos on your blog. I also do island parking and I do island parking because when I come to take my train in the morning, I am leaving when it's over rush hour and sometimes I have no choice but park on the curb island. But yesterday I did not have to do island parking but when coming back to my car I noticed white car on the island and I noticed that writing was on the windshield. I would think someone thought it funny to tell the person who owns the car that no parking is supposed to be there. WE KNOW. I also noticed that on the other lot where the Chrysler sales place is, a bulldozer machine is parked in a space. Why? Does someone drive the bulldozer from home to Osawa to take the train? So that's why I do island parking sometimes because GO needs to create more spots and not let bulldozes be allowed to park!

Sincerely,
Pony

Heading home ...

Oh good christ.

Got a kid here a quad over who is using his snot as play-doh.

It's 10:25 at night. This kid is no older than 3.

According to his momma, whose been on her celly since we left Union, they've been out shopping all day. Obviously Kleenex wasn't on the list.

Wheee! He rides it like a hobo! God, who do I have to pay for a ride like this? It'd be like rollercoaster freedom. No bar. Please stand. No hills

Thanks Dan!

The almost epic meltdown of the LSE's very own Super Jesus

To: cj@thiscrazytrain.com

Hey CJ!
Remember this lovely video I sent you? http://www.thiscrazytrain.com/2010/12/yes-there-really-is-santa-claus.html

A little back story: I have seen the guy in the video wearing these really elaborate t-shirts that look like they're from a rock concert, but they're really these hardcore Jesus shirts. One day I witnessed him reading from the bible to a lady he was with (the only time I've seen him with someone). She professed that it was much too early for bible readings and thankfully shut him up. Due to these things, my friend and I have dubbed him "Super Jesus".

I've also witnessed him pounding on his chest like a gorilla which is completely unrelated, yet strangely hilarious.

Anyway, this morning my friend and I were sitting near him and from what I could see (it was a strange angle), someone got on and accidentally hit his newspaper out of his hand. The guy apologized to him right away and Super Jesus just started glaring at the poor guy. The poor guy then picked up the stuff he was just getting organized and took off very quickly. Could ya blame him?

Super Jesus sat in his seat for a while stewing over the fact that he lost his place in his newspaper and uttered an expletive.

At one of the next stops, someone else got on and sat next to him. My friend and I noticed the back of his hoodie said something to do with "F***ing Metal" (uncensored of course). We both laughed about how Super Jesus would not approve but then remembered he just swore to himself not a few minutes earlier. Metal Boy put on his loud headphones blaring metal (of course) which put Super Jesus into a complete rage.

He started to grip his ears and bent over and made a really loud angry sigh which clearly concerned the girl sitting directly behind him who looked at us completely startled.

Super Jesus continued to do this for a while and my friend was ready with his Blackberry to capture the epic, complete meltdown of the Super Jesus of the LSE.

I'll be honest. I was a little scared. I think he had some weird zen thing going on though, because eventually he stopped making a scene and went downstairs when we got to Union, politely thanking Metal Boy for moving.

The meltdown was close, but I'm officially on Super Jesus Meltdown Watch 2011. I guess even the crazy people get annoyed with things like large backpacks and loud earphones.

P.S. I really hope Super Jesus doesn't read your blog! haha No really...he kind of scares me.

Why not make yourself more comfortable?

Hells no, your boots ain't dirty.

Did you take out a baby wipe from your purse and wipe your soles down before you threw your boots onto the seat?

In fact, you look so tired, from studying hard and all, that I feel compelled to make your ride more comfortable. You must be exhausted from schlepping around all day, walking like Jesus walks on water, because your magic boots never touch ground as you go about your business.

Hungry?

How about some nuts?
Now I don't want you to get thirsty, so here's a margarita. No, take it. It's on me.
No, don't thank me. I don't get as tired as you that I'm entitled to put my feet up on the seat.

That's only for special people like you.
Thanks to Shauna for the pic.

This dude was so hunched over while reading his book, he was almost on top of me

This pictorial is better if you hum "Eye of The Tiger" from Rocky as you read it

Bum. Bah da bum. Ba da bummmmmmmm ... bah da bum ... Got it? Good. Keep reading.

See the door donkey? Complete with knapsack on the floor? The train is boarding. Door donkey changes position. This isn't good enough for me. It's obvious he doesn't plan on sitting. More people get on. More people begin to crowd around the door. It's now 7 minutes to departure. I'm getting angrier. I feel like I should say something. I feel like .... I .... must ... become ... the door police. You know how people say don't get your knickers in a knot? Well, this is guy is so annoyed with the door donkeys as he tries to get by, his pants are wedged into his ass. Finally, I lose it.

I step into the doorway (this is the 5:10pm LSE train, I was waiting for the 5:20 pm LSE train) and ask the door donkeys why, if they know they plan to stand, do they feel they are entitled to block the doorway, causing congestion and forcing people to maneuver their way around them? I asked they extend the courtesy of staying on the platform and boarding when the train is full or at least move into the aisle. Then they can block the door all they want.

So what happened?

I was first greeted with stunned looks, then surprise, then indignation. Apparently, according to door donkeys, since they were on the train first, they are entitled to stake their spot even if they choose to stand. That ain't right, I said. It's rude and a hazard. What a bunch of assholes. Seriously.

I say to others, stop putting up with this B.S. Speak up. Even more aggravating is to listen to door donkeys complain when other passengers step on their feet while boarding or make contact with them. Really?

Grow up.

This jam is amplified

This man sitting across from me yesterday was trying in vain to have a very confidential phone call with a co-worker. He hid behind a newspaper so that others couldn't read his lips and I also think he thought the newspaper would drown out his voice. Instead, it amplified his voice and we all heard how he really felt about his boss.

Dammit, I wish I had a cellphone camera but I don't. I was on the 9:13 pm lse and this guy was sitting four seats away from me looking like Elton John on the muppet show (I'm old enough to remember when it ran prime time). Here's a link to the photo: http://www.mewbox.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Elton-John.jpg. I have no idea why he was dressed like a Elvis auditioning for Pretty in Pink. I can only fathom he was returning from an audition for a Pepto-Bismal commercial. He seemed really comfortable as he rocked his platform, pleather-white boots and had on a matching fedora with boa. No jacket. Just the pink jumpsuit with rhinestones. Any thoughts?
Did he have a cane?

Just a trim...

GO buys the rails. GO gives the trees near Danforth station the finger.

It's not like CN did anything about the gang of leaves that came out, fingers snapping, every fall making our evening commutes home stretch out for hours.

It was time for a trim.

I'm on the 553 coming into Oshawa and the CSA just announced to the whole train that smoking isn't allowed on the platform. Something something rules and compliance. I'm sorry but since when did GO own the OUTSIDE? If I want to smoke, I'll smoke. GO doesn't own the AIR!!!!!!

From 9054427423 (CJ)

I dunno. You're asking an asthmatic who often walks behind a cloud of smoke from people who do this quite often, right under signs that say No Smoking. I think it's because you're walking on Government Property and that cigarette smoke doesn't necessarily drift up but outwards, causing a cloud. Get a few of you going and it's not like I can avoid it.

07:39 PM

A baby is defenseless. You can walk ahead of me if you don't like it. Sounds like you have a problem with smokers. Next you're going to suggest I quite, like it's easy.

From 9054427423

07:40 PM

Nope. I'm not here to counsel people and I have my own demons. It's only a few steps to the parking lot. Surely you can hold it. In fact, all of the smokers own the space around the ticket punchers, the news boxes and the station itself, so how much more space do you need? The platform is a sanctuary for those who don't want to inhale second-hand smoke.

From 905289XXXX

I'm not going to argue about the overall quality of Oshawa air. I'm talking about the fact that the platform is non-smoking. It's a rule. There's lots of rules I don't agree with but I follow them regardless. I don't know how you feel I can help you. I didn't write the by-law. All I can do is put this out to my readers. How hard is it to shut the door for the toilet?

Holy Hanna, folks. Some of you sure are lazy.

Maybe y'all enjoy the sour smell of your fresh deposits, but I don't.

The sliding doors don't shut behind you automatically. This isn't the grocery store. If you had to slide the door open, you have to slide the door shut.

So I got up, climbed over people, pushed past the door donkeys and shut the door.

Of course, when I'm mad and straight out of having been in Customer Service to deal with this morning's gong show, I'll say my peace and I preached fire and brimstone to the door donkeys too lazy to slide the door shut.

Smell aside, who wants to stare at a toilet?!

The story of the seat blocker

Look at how busy this train is!

by Jenn H.

Dear CJ, Last night I rode the 4:53 train home to Whitby. The train was full when I got on so I climbed over the stair pigs (see my second email to you) and went and stood on the mid-level section, near the door to the next train. I'm also six months pregnant but it's hard to tell and I don't mind standing for the first half of the trip because I can usually get a seat after Pickering.

However, this guy gave me his seat and he went to stand where I was standing. Just outside of Pickering, this woman sitting in the outside seat of the quad next to mine stands up. She then puts her two purses on the seat. I think, ok, she's getting off at Pickering and so all the people on the stairs and also the guy who gave me his seat can sit. The train leaves Pickering and this woman is STILL standing! But her purses have a seat!

I've seen this kind of behaviour before and I think it's rude and inconsiderate. If you're only going to sit until Pickering and there's people traveling to Oshawa or Whitby, how about you leave a seat for them? So I poked her in the back and asked her if she could leave the seat free for someone who wants to sit. She said she was getting off at Ajax. I said not right now you're not. But she continued to hog the seat and began talking to the woman sitting (her friend I think, as they were chatting when we were still at Union) as if to ignore me. Unbelievable.

The guy standing tells me not to worry about it. But it's not right! It's just plain rude. What has happened to just plain courtesy? I've been riding the train for 11 years and I find the inconsideration of some people just keeps getting worse.

Do you see feet opposite the lady in the gray pants? The lady standing in the camel-coloured coat hogged this seat for her purses from outside Pickering to Ajax.

It was raining yesterday but this foot rider has magic running shoes. Shoes that don't get dirty, or muddy

Ballad of the stair pig

Lovingly penned by Jenn from Whitby

This stair pig is annoyed. She was first on the train and staked her spot on the stairs. As people passed her, she gave dirty looks of inconvenience, that Heaven forbid, people would actually want to sit! On the upper level!

Here's how I see it. If you know you're going to stand, how about you get on the train last?

Problem solved.

I love making contact with these idiots when I board. And like CJ said in a previous comment, I put my weight into it.

This Crazy Train's Presto Chronicles, Chapter 6: THE END?

Twenty fours hours ago, I went online and deposited $68.00 to my Presto e-purse.

I tapped my card this morning. What do you think happened?

May I remind the donkeys running this archaic e-payment purse system that GO trains aren't like TTC subway trains. They don't run 2 minutes apart during rush hour.

Up popped a message when I tapped that read "INS. FUNDS. SEE CUS SRVCE" - something to that effect. I saw red! Red!

I don't have to time to see Customer Service. I got a Presto card to avoid the station all together. I don't want to line up. I don't want to wait. I want to get on the train and I want to get off the train.

I figured I'd deal with whatever that message meant when I got to Union which also meant being late for work. I'd rather be 10 minutes late for work than wait a half hour for the 8:25 train.

I hate, hate, hate being put in this position.

But guess what happened? Yep.

At Pickering, two GO constables got on and I got nailed. It didn't matter that I had a 20-ride history of tapping on and off tied to the system. It didn't matter that I got out my Blackberry and showed the constable the confirmation email of my $68.00 deposit.

I got a warning. And after it was all explained to me what the Warning Notice meant, I noticed that my last name (a portion of it that I don't share online) was spelled incorrectly. The constable was nice, pleasant even, but don't lecture me about taking time to go into the station. I don't have TIME. Have you tried to park at Oshawa GO Station? I do a daycare drop off at 7:30am. That's the contract I have with my provider. That's how my lifestyle works, so I have limited to time to f*ck around at the station in the morning. I park, tap my card, EXPECT IT TO BE UPDATED, and get on the train.

So don't lecture me when you can't take the time to spell my name right on the warning notice. I'm not mad at the constable. I'm just angry with the situation. He handled it well and I'm too honest for my own good, because I pointed it out that if I get stopped again, my ID won't match with the person on file. Oh no! I'll do this right to the end. Put me on the list! I pay my fare. I pay my fare every damn time.

What happened this morning has left a bad taste in my mouth and also didn't seem to convince anyone sitting with me on the train to buy into the system. Many were surprised there was a delay when you deposit online. No one seemed impressed that if you wanted your card up-to-date at deposit, you have to visit a wicket.

"So what's the point then?" asked one woman. I didn't have an answer.

Online e-payment/e-load should be instantaneous when you next tap your card.

If Tim Horton's can get it right, so can Presto.

If it's a cost factor in regards to upgrading the system, charge an annual fee for the card. Find a way. Because when the card becomes mandatory, the expectation of the public won't be to pray for the next 24 hours that their card will work when they roll out of bed in the morning!

Alone on a subway train, guy loses his mind over the fact

Oh dear God, really?

In the video below, this guy loses his mind over the fact that he's on a subway car by himself in DC. Maybe it's the fact that it's during the day that's got him so freaked out.

For those of us who ride GO, it's not unusual to wind up in a coach all by yourself, even at the end of evening rush hour as you near the last stop on the line.

What's next? A college kid recording himself running around an empty campus library?

I will say that if I ever got on an early morning train, during the week, and I was the only one on the train for the whole ride to Union, the last thing I'd be doing is acting like Charlie Sheen being told his porn star girlfriends were being taken away. Isn't such a scenario a dream come true for most of us?

Clearly the dude in this video isn't a regular commuter train passenger.

The video contains some NSFW language. You've been warned, so turn your speakers down.

GO bus drivers vs. TTC bus drivers

On occasion, I've taken the GO bus and have used the bus service probably 50 times or so (return) from my rural Clarington home to the Oshawa GO station.

Different bus drivers but always, 99 percent of the time, I've been subjected to extremely pleasant operators.

Today was no exception. I had a lovely woman on the ride in and a nice gent on the way home. I was greeted and fared goodbye.

This is in stark contrast with my recent experiences with the TTC. Not once, in the several weeks where I've used the service due to a foot injury and difficulty walking, have I been greeted, thanked, smiled at or even acknowledged.

One incident two Fridays ago really put me over the edge when I bought tokens at the Queen Station and while absent minded, didn't drop one as my fare in the token box.

Incredibly, the collector pounded on the glass, screamed at me to pay my fare and then proceeded to berate me in front of strangers.

Oh hells no. Who did she think she was talking to? I'm not a fare jumper and a simple 'excuse me' into her microphone would have sufficed. I put a token in the box and calmly told her that I speak and understand English, that there was no need for such dramatic grandstanding. Honest to God. Who trains these jerks?

In contrast, tonight I had to pay the driver when I got on the GO bus at the Oshawa GO Station, and then my phone rang. I climbed on and sat down. The driver patiently waited for me and all the while, I'm oblivious to the fact I hadn't paid yet. A couple seconds went by and he kindly asked me where I was going and pointed to the fare machine. I jumped up, paid, and profusely apologized, saying I was distracted by the news I was given and he actually asked if everything was all right, with genuine concern.

Everything *is* all right.

Customer service. Isn't it nice?

Ugh

Rode the GO bus this morning and was dropped off at the stop by my hubby at 6:00am.
What an ungodly hour.
It was made even better that in the bus shelter, the only shelter near this rural bus stop, stood a woman sucking on a cigarette.
So guess who stood in the driving wind and rain for 11 minutes?
Here's the thing, I did say something which was met with no reaction, just a shrug.
I then exclaimed, "Well, sucks to be me!" as I stepped out of the shelter, doing an about face when I inhaled the smoke.
I can't tolerate cigarette smoke even I wanted to. I have asthma.
Secondly, let's say I could, why should I voluntarily subject myself to second hand smoke?
I hate people sometimes.

I can time travel, oh, and like the new logo?

Yes, I know the date says Monday when it's really Saturday (or Sunday).

Those of you reading this post on Monday will be lost because it really is Monday. Don't stress over it. Trust me.

I fast-forwarded some of my postings because I know I won't have time on Monday to do anything with the site and I wanted the posts up now instead of then. Don't ask why. Just enjoy.

Oh! And I get to ride the GO bus Monday morning because my CUV decided to blow a gasket, burn out a few sparkplugs and backfire all at once as I was inching it towards the dealership - check engine light all aglow - Saturday morning. There's a recall for what happened, apparently. Awesome. Glad I wasn't on the highway.

Thanks to Mystery Man, those in the know will enjoy our SpongeBob pillow friend who thinks her morning GO train ride to Union is also her own hotel suite. She's the topic for version 7.0.

Mass marketing. They has it

On the LSW 7:58 from Clarkson to Union this morning a woman carried on her bags plus 2 massive boxes of Girl Guide cookies (which of course required a seat to themselves). She takes this train every day with her 2 train friends and they laugh and talk loudly every morning. Today they exchanged cookies and one of the friends took some upstairs and proceeded to sell them seat-to-seat. I casually suggested she walk down to the accessibility coach and ask Desiree (yup, that's our regular CSM - not sure if that is her real name or something glamourous she chose to tell us) to make an announcement that cookies are available in car ----. My sarcasm was actually met with raucous laughter and "that's a good one!", making me party to the shenanigans. I apologize to my fellow passengers for my part in prolonging this behaviour. And for buying a box. My coworkers and I are enjoying it thoroughly...

Hey cj,
I'm on the bus right now and the only one standing because the doorknob in the back in the centre seat is taking up 3 seats. He could clearly see me and didn't even flinch. At this point, I have no time to deal with ignorance and people who lack chivalry and basic common sense. Jerk! This just proves that stupidity doesn't just happen on GO trains.

Ahhh... the Brampton GO parking lot at dusk

Lovingly penned by Bryan from Brampton

What a peaceful place to be. When you're parking illegally to catch a train, it's easy to hide your idiocy in plain sight. However, when you decide to take the GO Bus home after the GO train stops running, your stupidity is revealed.

Come on, GestapGO.... time to start towing these idiots. There's LOTS of room to maneuver a hungry tow truck's stinger to his front wheels when there's no other cars around. And once these guys start having to pay a parking ticket PLUS the impound feeds to free their rides from the hoopty hoosegow, maybe it'll be safe to park again without fear of backing out of a parking lot with a millimeter of clearance behind you.

Priority. Best be recognizing.

Hey, guess what?

I'm one of those assholes, too, that schleps their way up to the opposite platform when it's well past rush hour, where I'll board using the doors designated for people exiting the train, but tonight, I made nice (because I was told that when people do this, it irritates people waiting on the correct platform) and went up to Track 5 and boarded using the doors designated.

But here's the thing, I don't owe you donkeys boarding on the departure side, priority seating, nor should I have to stand and wait to make my way to the aisle while you and your GF heave several large suitcases onto the train. So when I sighed and made hand motions for you jackasses to wait til everyone had boarded, it's not my fault you had to panic and hustle your load because the CSA was trying to close the doors on Track 6.

It's not my fault you decided, after taking the elevator (luggage doesn't make you disabled by the way), that the accessibility car just wouldn't do so you shunted your crap all the way down to the first car. Why? So you can be first off the train? No matter what the plan is, you're still hauling ass no matter where you go.

Anytime you break the rules there are consequences. So those playing by the rules don't owe you a lick of favour. I also don't need to watch you strut your peacock feathers from your seat where you're posturing like a douche after you tried to tell me off for sighing at you, only for me to put you in your place.

Dude, please, don't blow smoke out of your ass at me. When you're in the wrong, you're not in the position to whine.

Like I said, I'm guilty of boarding on the departure side but I don't act like I'm entitled to it.

I've also learned this is a practice that bothers a rather large audience of people and I can see why.

Aw man, seriously?

I can't believe I am taking the 11:13pm train (aggressive deadlines at year end really suck) and it doesn't help that some Korn concert with other similar bands, aka music I don't like, has let out at the ACC and the emo/goth/sad fml children are heading home to their somewhat comfortable suburban homes in Whitby. Good times. Here they come screaming up the stairs, high as mofos at a GD concert circa the 70s.

Yeah, I'll shake my cane.

Now get off lawn.

Dalton buys us some rails

Metrolinx acquires key commuter-rail segment of CN's Kingston Subdivision east of Toronto Union Station

TORONTO, March 30 /CNW Telbec/ - Metrolinx has purchased a section of CN's Kingston Subdivision rail line, used primarily for commuter and passenger rail operations in eastern Toronto, for C$299 million.

The rail line acquired by Metrolinx from CN (TSX: CNR) (NYSE:CNI) is composed of the two- and three-track rail corridor east of Union Station in downtown Toronto to a junction near Whites Road in Pickering, Ont., where the line connects with GO Transit's separate rail right-of-way.

Metrolinx President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce McCuaig said, "With today's announcement, Metrolinx gains full ownership of an important segment of GO Transit's Lakeshore East commuter rail corridor from Union Station to Oshawa, Ont., and a direct connection to GO's Stouffville corridor in eastern Toronto.

"Owning this rail corridor section better positions GO to improve service, better control operations and plan future service growth."

Metrolinx now owns 61 per cent of the rail corridors on which GO Transit operates.

CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau said, "We are pleased to have concluded this sales agreement to transfer a critical link in the commuter rail network to Metrolinx, while protecting CN's operating rights over this line to ensure continued service to its freight customers. CN has a strong partnership with Metrolinx and we will continue to support commuter rail as a sustainable mode of transport in the Greater Toronto Area."

Please visit www.cn.ca/kingston for a map of the Kingston Subdivision and CN and GO Transit rail corridors in the Greater Toronto Area.

Time to freshen up the logo, kids

Some of the recent suggestions for a new crazy train banner:

1) Pac Man (the icon on the left) can't park.

One email reads, "draw yellow lines and a stick shit for the green talking one". Oh how I laffed. I love typos.

2) Set it on fire.

Apparently, a lot of you are pyros. Some of you are sick in the head, too. Why on Earth would I set fire to a dog? Even if it is Photoshop. Yes, it was suggested for this post.

3) Animate the Pac Man so that it's snoring. With sound.

When the hell did I give the impression I work for Disney?

4) Set K.P. on fire.

Again, some of you need help. Of course, #4 may be lost on some. Better keep reading so you can catch up.

5) Make the Pack Man logo be a door donkey.

This is probably where I'm headed. But as always, more suggestions are welcome. I don't plan on shuttering the site anytime soon, so a list of ideas helps me to help you.

Why, when parking is at such a premium, can't some people just TRY HARDER?

James, hand me my lighter.

Littlest Hobo rides the train

God I loved that show.

"Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

So if you want to join me for a while,
Just grab your hat, come travel light, that's hobo style.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll find what I call home, Until tomorrow, you know I'm free."

Sigh.

Take it away 905717XXXX:

A young girl was riding the 753 Barrie to Union (Tuesday morning) with a German Sheppard in a LARGE cage as well as a bunch of luggage. The cage is taking up one whole seat section on the accessibility coach (the end seat with just the one row of seats) while she is and her luggage take up another. She is laying down across the seat so no one can sit beside her. I wonder if she paid for the 4 seats of space she has taken over.

(pause)

I might ask her if her name is Leana.

Hi CJ

I just found your blog recently and it made my hubby and I really happy (That's what this is about, folks, bringing joy ... ).

This morning on the 7:20 train we were treated to the brilliant musings of this girl. We got to hear about who she's dating, who wants to date her, who wants to be Facebook friends with her and how 30 year olds look scary old. At deafening volume (we are 2 quads away).

Her companion mostly just agreed; probably because he couldn't get a word in.
H.M. sent in a sound-byte of this motormouth but I need to check with my studying-to-be-a-lawyer-guy-whose-the-brother-of-the guy-who-changes-my-windshield-wipers if there's any "I'm going to consider legal action" consequences of publishing a person's voice.
Wannabe lawyer gives it the green light. If you download the file and drop it into iTunes, it'll play for you. Sounds like two hippos in a cage match with like, ohmigawd, commentary.

So, what are you doing tomorrow, say around 12:43 pm? Eating lunch? Maybe riding 100+ km of oratorical delight?

How to submit photographic evidence using your Blackberry with no shutter sound

Yes!

I love people who are determined to find a way.

When chatting with a reader via text this morning, said reader discovered that if you want to take a photo with your BlackBerry without the shutter sound, it can be done if you follow these steps:

1. Call voicemail
2. When the voicemail greeting kicks in, press the Blackberry button and choose Home Screen
3. Take a picture while the phone is on Home Screen; the shutter sound will be disabled.
4. Press power twice to end the call and exit the camera app.

Brilliant! So send them in!

Holy Aneurysm

I think the CSAs need to be equipped with bullhorns so if they need to yell at people attempting to hold the train for other people still running to catch it (like the 8:15?) in Pickering this morning, they don't subject all of us on the train to their yelling into the P.A. System.

Our CSA didn't introduce himself this morning but we originated in Oshawa as the 7:53. He lost his mind when some asshats at Pickering wouldn't board.

Dude, just shut the doors. You don't owe anyone favours. The departure time is the same every morning. It's not a surprise to those boarding that the train showed up.

So a few of you doubted I managed the site while on the train with just a Blackberry and a safety pin.

The last two posts below this one were both published using only my BlackBerry and the select and paste text feature.

I try to do what I can on the train and pretty it all up later with graphics when there's time.

When I send posts from my BlackBerry to the site, they're appended by Rogers with that ridiculous footer message of how I sent the email. That's how you can tell. Later, when in front of a computer, I delete the footer.

Ta-dah!

When you say 'bag', what exactly are you referring to (oh you'll get the visual soon)...

To cj@thiscrazytrain.com

Hi CJ!

My train ride was one for the books this morning, so I had to share.

The 706 express out of Pickering is always busy, and today was no exception.  As the Pickering riders and myself squeezed into the limited standing room only, I took position near the courtesy seating, only to notice a couple sleeping away.  Sadly, they only slept for about 5 minutes before she started nuzzling him, giving "bunny kisses", nibbling on his ear, rubbing his (I'm assuming) stomach behind his bag, and eventually leading to some kissing with tongue.  This proceeded off and on the entire trip to Union.  If I wasn't already feeling nauseous from being 6 months pregnant and standing on the train, I definitely felt ill from watching them.  A peck or two on the train is more than acceptable, but PLEASE.. save it for the corridor club or your bedroom.

And at the very least, save the courtesy seating for someone who needs it!

The lady who chose to sit beside me tonight, bless her overtaxed heart, is so crammed in her seat that her arms are heaving in rhythm with her chest. Her right arm is taking my left arm with her. So we go up and down ... up and down (before you comment, I'm no toothpick) ... up and down.

What's green, looks like Pac Man and answers to Leana?

Below is a text exchange I had this evening with a person claiming to be the sister of my logo's left Pac Mac image. I'll call her PMS (as in Pac Man's sister) for short.

My replies are in green.

PMS: u made my sister cry

sorry, who are you talking about?

PMS: you know who i mean. this is cj right?

damn, my crystal ball's in the shop so you're gonna have to help me out here. describe her

PMS: don't f*ck around. i mean leana

omg. really? look i don't have time for prank texts

PMS: i'm pretty serious

and i'm pretty sure this is just someone being randomly juvenile

PMS: ha, look whose talking

PMS: u like to talk a lit of shit

hey, that rhymed

you're like a rapper or something

let me guess, next you'll tell me to step off or let it slide, right?

PMS: just leave my sister alone and stop people talking shit about her

don't you mean talking smack?

PMS: don't make me mad. i'll find out what train you ride and come talk to you personally

oh, like a real man should do?

PMS: haha, you're so stupid. i'm a woman

er, right... the site's anonymous anyway, no one knows who she is.

PMS: she linked in on her facebook

ok. and that's my problem, because ... ?

PMS: it just is

How old is your sister?

PMS: 21

and she used her real name (first name) on the internet and then linked a site where she wrote a comment on her facebook account where people she knows would know she wrote it

PMS: so?

oh snap, is this about the logo? (Background here for those who are new)

PMS: her friends are now linking it and relinking it. people she doesn't even know are giving her a hard time

i still don't understand how this is my problem

PMS: you need to take your site down

excuse me?

PMS: you need to shut it down or else i will consider legal action

sigh ... if i had a dollar for everytime i've heard that

does your sister look like a green pac man?

PMS: no. just shut it down.

listen, i don't have her last name. i don't have her photo. what exactly would you sue me for? for her error in judgment to link the site on facebook, actually identifying herself as the author of a comment and then when i use her name in a logo graphic, a first name i might add, on a picture that doesn't even resemble a human, this is now my problem?

PMS: yep

no, it's leana's problem, sorry

i didn't post the site to her facebook profile nor link it. the only person who leana should be upset with... is leana

PMS: whatever. i'll be speaking to a lawyer tomorrow.

awesome. make sure to have the lawyer call me. you have the number (obviously). i'll be availble during the lunch hour. 12 - 1. i'll be expecting that call. i won't appreciate having my time wasted while i make myself available for a conversation if it doesn't happen

by the way, i just checked youropenbook.org and i can't find any evidence of facebook linking for the post in question in a single status update.

hello?

i honestly don't know why people like you bother ... get bent.

How come you don't post on weekends?

Hello! Thanks for asking. I believe it's the bible that says work for six and on the 7th day the easter bunny rested and that meant there would be 6 more weeks of winter.

260: Huh? I don't understand what you meant by that. How come you don't post on weekends?

Do you work 7 days a week?

260: No

Neither do I. Typically I publish Monday to Friday but have on occasion posted stuff on weekends if I have time

260: Oh. I was really hoping to see something new soon

Well guess what? You know what tomorrow is?

260: Yeah. So you'll have something then?

Actually, I might just have something for today

260: Really? i'm on the train right now and I'm bored as f*ck so something funny to read would help.

I agree.

260: So will you write something???

No, I won't... But you did...

260: I don't get it

What station did you just pass?

260: eglinton.

Door Justice?

Tonight I stood on Platform 11 to wait for the 5:20 pm (Union - Oshawa) and from there observed the 5:10 pm (Union to Oshawa) train pulling into Track 13.

Waiting for the 5:10 pm were two GO constables, presumably to check fares. Maybe, but what I found interesting was that they stood near the doorway as the train filled and it looked like to me from their hand gestures and facial expressions (and some lip reading) that they were monitoring the door donkeys, asking the donkeys to let people board.

It was hard to take pictures of this with the 5:05pm train in the way but these two constables were doing a great job at keeping the doorway clear.

Sadly, aren't we all adults here? Isn't it just common sense that while the train is boarding you wait on the platform if you don't plan on sitting, and then board prior to departure? This makes perfect sense to me.
