You would think sleep studies would be a medical requirement for this kind of job...

Could be narcolepsy.

Getting sleep in this noisy world is near impossible.
And one can't simply postpone their obligations and duties simply because a noisy distracting environment kept them awake or awoken them halfway through the night.

No matter what one's current condition one still has to keep on keeping on.
Blame society, not the individual.

Of course the egotistic (and ever-autocratic) legal systems and court systems would never hear of that now.

This is a good argument for keeping two person crews. That way if something happens to one crew member the other can take over.
