Located an interview I did back in January, I always wonder what happens to the rest
I love talking about this website. I love talking about this gong show of a GO village and how without you all, there would be no site, no reason to keep "GO"-ing.
After an interview wraps, rarely does the reporter or radio personality follow up with me to give me a heads-up of whether the story was used, where I can read it, or listen to it.
So occasionally I will google myself to locate what's been published and today I found the interview I did for the PRESTO card roll-out on the TTC in January.
The best radio interview I ever did had to be the one with Jerry Agar at Newstalk 1010. That was hysterical. I never think to record these. I have nothing on record. Even the CBC interview, which was my first-ever media interview, and was done live in-studio, is long gone.
KX96 was a disaster. I'm glad there's no evidence. I was unprepared for the questions. I've learned since to ask the reporter or DJ if we can pick a time rather than agreeing to something "on the spot".

Confession update
Wednesday was the worst day. The withdrawal symptoms (which are primarily all in my head) were awful. I made it all the way to 2:33 am Thursday morning before I broke down and took one spray in each nostril. This helped me get at least 3.5 hours sleep.
Yesterday was waaay better. I went all day with little congestion. Taking the sinus pills help and I'm weaning myself off. Last night, I made it to midnight and took one spray in one nostril (the right one) and slept fine all night.
I averaged 10 to 20 sprays throughout a 24-hour period. If I had a cold, it wasn't unusual to snort my way through an entire bottle of Drixoral in three days.
I've now been warned to be careful with Tylenol Cold and Sinus as too much of it, or a reliance on it,can cause liver failure. Lovely.
It's been suggested I switch to Sudafed. I think I should try after today to go completely cold turkey.
Wish me luck!

Confession
What the hell, I'll just put this out here.
For the past 15 years, I've been battling an addiction. A rather strange and bizarre addiction.
I'm addicted to nasal spray.
That's right. I'm addicted to the stuff you snort up your nose when you have a cold. It started shortly before I got married. I got really sick. My asthma was out of control. I was in the hospital and on all kinds of medication. When I was well enough to go to back to work, I noticed that whenever I had to use my puffers, I would get extremely congested. I could not breathe out of my nose at all. A co-worker suggested I try Afrin. So I went out and got some at Shoppers Drug Mart that same day. I was hooked instantly.
I hoard nasal sprays. I have them in drawers, in bags, at work, in my nightstand, in the car and in my purse. I even have one stashed at my parents' house.
About two weeks ago, I sat down and calculated how much this dependency (which my doctor calls it and who blames it on environmental allergies) has cost me. In the past 15 years, I've spent roughly $5300 on over-the-counter nasal sprays. My current weapon of choice is Claritin Allergy. I've tried all the prescription steroid-based ones. None of them worked.
In 2008, I managed to quit cold turkey and it took three weeks of absolute fucking hell and next to no sleep, but I did it. I managed to go three days without using anything. Mind you, one nostril was completely clogged, but I could breathe freely out of the other ... and then I got sick with a bad cold. In less than 24 hours, I was right back where I started.
Three weeks ago, I was diagnosed with a severe sinus infection. The walk-in doctor was intrigued by my addiction and shocked I didn't have any health complications such as liver damage. As far as I know, and my family doctor has been monitoring me, I don't have any side effects - yet. This walk-in doctor suggested I consider using sinus tablets with pseudophedrine and try again to beat my dependency on nasal sprays.
This morning I am proud to admit to the world that I spent the entire night, and slept, not taking a "hit". The last time I've taken a "hit" was around 7:30 pm last night.
It's still early. I have to get through today. The struggle is real.

Recently I was cc'd on a series of emails from members of the GTA cycling community about how the current transit situation in the GTA does not accommodate for commuters who want to commute with their bikes on-board GO trains (and TTC subways).I'm going to work with what I know - GO trains. I'm a cyclist myself. When the weather is good, it's not unusual for me to bike 30 to 40 kilometres around Courtice and into Bowmanville. One day, I'd like to bike all the way to the Oshawa GO station, just to see what it's like. But the lack of bike lanes is a concern, and although the City of Clarington has slowly installed bike lanes on key roads in Courtice, as part of a pilot project, they are not part of a Durham Region-wide network that would get me to the Oshawa GO Station without risking my life in traffic with cement trucks and distracted, texting and potentially murderous drivers. I admire those who don't give a shit and do it anyway. Honestly? I'm too scared.
But enough about me. As it stands, the trains we have are not designed to accommodate more than two bikes in a designated area and because bikes are bulky, they restrict movement and at Union, become a hazard because of how narrow the platforms are. The platforms were designed for people. People forget that Union Station is older than Jesus. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, nobody thought about whether downtown workers would one day, in 2015, want to bring a bike into the city and use it to ride to work. Union isn't built for bikes. The TTC subway isn't built for bikes. Bikes take up room. Room that was designed for people and as it stands, can't even accommodate the people we have now. Have you seen the platform widths of 24 and 25? How about 12 and 13? Especially around the stairwells?
Simply put, it's dangerous.
But can this change? Sure it can, but when? I'm still waiting for the Lakeshore East GO Train service to be extended to Bowmanville, which in my mind, is a bigger priority than being able to bring a bike with me during morning and evening rush hour. I continue to live in Durham Region because I refuse to give up the dream. The official announcement came down from the then-Mike Harris' provincial conservatives in 2000 that Metrolinx would run a train to Waverly Road and Baseline in Bowmanville. I started getting really excited when the farm lands around Trulls Road and Baseline in Courtice were expropriated for a station and parking lots. I jumped for joy in 2014 when the owner of the former Knob Hill lands in Oshawa and Metrolinx finally closed the deal on what would be the second Oshawa GO Station, only to learn there is no money for tracks. No money for trains. No money for parking lots. No money for stations. No money for signals. Nothing.
I sat on the emails about transit supporting bicycle commuting for over a month. I agree it would be a wonderful added benefit but not without billions of dollars in upgrades needed to make it happen. However, I agree that at present, some changes could be made such as an additional coach where the lower level is designated for bikes. I won't share the emails I got, but I will share the reply that was given.

We have recently started reviewing this policy in coordination with our Smart Commute team, whose goal is to help commuters explore smart travel options such as cycling. We will be looking at various travel options for cyclists including implementing a designated coach for bikes and amending the policy for peak service options. We will also look at using the accessibility coach as you have suggested.
I realize that running a parallel bus service along our existing corridors would be of great benefit to you and many other cyclists. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough buses to supply such service at this time. In addition, it would take buses away from those routes where bus services are the only option.
Mr. Pinkerton, I was very sorry to learn that your bicycle had been stolen from one of our GO Stations. I would like to assure you that safety and security are top priorities for us. As part of the bicycle policy review, we will also be looking at how we can advance safety measures to help prevent security issues related to bicycle crimes.

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough buses to supply such service at this time. In addition, it would take buses away from those routes where bus services are the only option.
Mr. Pinkerton, I was very sorry to learn that your bicycle had been stolen from one of our GO Stations. I would like to assure you that safety and security are top priorities for us. As part of the bicycle policy review, we will also be looking at how we can advance safety measures to help prevent security issues related to bicycle crimes.

When GO Transit operates an impromptu train such as Friday's trip E921 announced by Burlington station staff as all stops to Oshawa, and the trip is fraught with delays to Union station, whereupon passengers are told to leave the train and catch a later one for points east of Union, why is that trip not covered by the GO Train Service Guarantee?

Friday the 13th – I should have expected this from GO Transit

I exited the local bus at Fairview Mall in St. Catharines just as the
GO Transit 15:07 express bus to Burlington turned the corner onto YMCA Drive
and was gone. Not to worry; the 15:14
bus would be along shortly. Well, my
watch ticked past 15:14 and then past 15:24.
Something was amiss, so with time approaching 15:30, I called GO
Transit. I had to “zero-out” to get a
CSR; I was in no mood to listen to blah, blah, blah about York University.
I asked the CSR where our bus was, as the trip was now about 15 minutes
behind schedule. After being on hold for
about 5 minutes, I was told the matter had been escalated to the CSR’s
supervisor. After another 5 minutes, I
was told the bus could not be located. I
left my cell phone number and received a call back about 10 minutes later. The CSR told me they were attempting to
scramble a relief bus, but if that option fell through, I would have to wait
for the next scheduled bus at 16:44.
Also, I was assured that I would not have to pay for my trip, as they
had my name.
I thanked her for the information, and then asked the CSR if the offer of
a free ride covered to the other 20 to 25 passengers waiting for the bus. That question was met with silence followed
by more time on hold while she consulted with her supervisor. When she came back on the line, the
conversation got a little weird.
CSR: I need you to do
something.
Me: What’s that?
CSR: Keep track of who was
there for the 15:14 pickup. They qualify
for a free ride, too. Anyone who shows
up now will be there for the next bus, so they won’t qualify.
My inside voice: WTF?! I’m not a Metrolinx employee. You folks in the Ivory Tower have no idea how
busy it is here in St. Catharines.
Me: That won’t work, because
there are too many passengers who ride the local transit on the platform. I have a better plan. I’ll tell those here a
security code; let’s pick 1514. Whoever
tells the driver “1514” gets a free ride.
All you have to do is contact the driver and relay that information. After concurrence on the plan, we thanked
each other and hung up.
Here we are stranded in St. Catharines.
A rescue bus with a rather surly driver arrived after 16:00 and took on
passengers without asking for payment from anyone. We made all regular scheduled stops, although
not one stop was announced. The interior
next-stop display rolled “SORRY – NOT IN SERVICE” for the whole trip. We arrived in Burlington GO station in time to
connect with the 17:37 Toronto bound train – an hour late. Our driver made no effort to open the cargo
bay door and unload the luggage. That
was left for me to do.
During this trip I met some interesting folks. The gentleman who sat beside me on the bus
recounted the afternoon he drove on the QEW behind the dump truck driver who
ran his vehicle into the Burlington Skyway bridge last year. On the train, I chatted with a lady from
Connecticut who had started her trip at 4:00 AM, had a side stop with family in
Syracuse before joining our ill-fated crew in St. Catharines. I told her I was embarrassed, since GO
Transit usually delivers their worst service when I
meet someone from another country.
I digress. Back to GO
Transit. What happened? How could a bus not be located? When a driver arrives for work, they sign-on
by radioing Operations and apprise them of the bus number they’ll be using for
their trip. How did this failed sign-on
escape Operations’ watchful eye? How is
it that the supervisor for the drivers in the area had no idea where the driver
was? If this were a one-time occurrence,
I’d shrug my shoulders and say “caca happens”.
But this problem happens with too much regularity on Route 12. When a driver is off work and has submitted
the appropriate paperwork, a report driver often is not assigned to cover the
work, as in the following case:
And, once again on Friday, Operations neglected to issue an email alert
for our “operational issue”. So, for
proving yet again that GO Transit is not a deserved winner of the APTA Outstanding
Public Transportation System Achievement Award...
Operations, you get a CIT!

Finding the better way: Metrolinx to ‘harmonize’ wayfinding in GTHA
The head of Applied Wayfinding in the U.K. is one of the people tasked with harmonizing the signage and directions given to users of 10 different transit agencies from here to Hamilton.

Started my mid-week March Break with a bang! As in bang! Your lights are dead.
My sister owns a cottage near the shore of Georgian Bay in a tiny little town called, wait for it, 'Tiny". I know, so original.
In 2013, my sister and brother-in-law tore down the 1940s original cottage that was there and rebuilt what resembles more of a house. I've not been up to see it. I was supposed to go this summer with my daughter, but then the whole house sale BS happened, which stressed out my vacation, and we didn't go.
Last night, we loaded up the car with food, bedding and other crap that people cart up to the cottage, and headed out after rush hour. We didn't even make it past Whitby before we were pulled over by another driver who was adamant to talk with us. At first we didn't know why this driver was high-beaming us, honking his horn and signaling with his hazards. If we changed lanes, he'd change lanes, and he kept waving his hand and pointing in a motion to pull over. I told my husband there must be something wrong with the car. And there was.
Our entire rear lighting system had failed. The car was completely dark at the back and being an all-black car, this made it even more dangerous and a hazard. We pulled off the highway at Brock Street with the other driver following us, and when it was safe to get out, he told us what was wrong.
Long story short, my husband was able to put in a spare fuse only to have it blow and concluded the electrical line had a short. So off to the dealer in the morning it had to go. We went home with the annoying ticking sound of the hazard lights mocking us, unloaded the car (which was a drag), put the food away (even more of a drag) and I drank a whole bottle of gwertz. Ah yes, a perfect night indeed.
Today we have a rented VW Golf, which for a 6 foot 2 guy like my husband is akin to folding one's self into a suitcase, but being March Break, the selection was limited, and the Chevy Spark was a "Oh, hells no" ... we haven't yet decided if we are still getting the hell out of Dodge.
Instead, we're going to look at cats. Yes, cats.

A note about blocked content
I realize that many of you who read the site at work are unable to see posts where I embed content from YouTube, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook because your company's internet use at work policy dictates these sites be blocked.
In the past, I used to screengrab this content so people would be able to view it, but then I ran into a little issue, and had to re-think my strategy. These social sites allow for embedding because it enables them to protect their brand and drive traffic to their sites. You can share content but you can't own the content. Oh the things you learn when you run a blog!
Thankfully I don't run any advertising on this site. It would have made the situation more precarious. I also don't have to go back and "cleanse" my site (again, thank god I never made money and continue to NOT profit from this site) or else I'd have to fire the cats and get a real live human to help untangle the mess it could have caused.

Driver of Ottawa OC Transpo bus makes a boo-boo but don't worry, that'll just buff out
Note the sign on the bus. Ottawa has been pushing PRESTO hard.
The bus behind and wedged against the accordion style bus was at the station, parked, when the driver of the accordion bus drove up and well, misjudged the distance to the platform.
A few broken mirrors and three hours later, the buses were separated and somewhere in Ottawa, an OC Transpo driver is feeling embarrassed.

Billy Bob here in St. Catharines. Remember, me? I’m stittin’ at the kitchen table at 2:30 in the AM writin’ this letter, cuz I ain’t been getting’ much sleep lately. Truth be told, I ain’t been gettin’ much of anything these days. You see, my missus, Daisy May has been madder than a wet hornet ever since she read about them drivers leaving you shiverin’ in the early mornin’ at your bus stop. And when my Daisy May ain’t happy, well, you know the rest.
Now, the missus ‘n’ me, we likes ridin’ them GO buses too (not the DD’s though), especially when we gotta head into Hogtown for our appointments with specialist doctors ‘n’ such (cuz we’re gettin’ older, eh). When we ride, we always brings our driver somethin’ from Timmy’s. Well, those drivers are so nice ‘n’ happy to see us. Now, where I was goin’ with this is, like on your 90A, buses on our Route 12 don’t always show up when our schedule says they oughta. But them drivers are so apologetic, and they explain exactly what buggered up the trip.
Now, Daisy May tells me the driver you ain’t seein’ eye to eye with is havin’ some troubles stayin’ true to her paddle. After listenin’ to our drivers, I got to thinkin’ that hittin’ them paddle times is kinda like playin’ horseshoes – close counts. There’s way too many things that can hose a trip, like crap weather, traffic ain’t flowin’ like it oughta, the driver had to sell a ton of tickets, a WMA passenger was helped to board the bus, the dang PRESTO terminal printer jammed over ‘n’ over, riders brought more luggage than Mrs. Howell on Gilligan's Island (remember her?), there was too many bicycles for the racks, pax had hosed or busted PRESTO cards, riders was clueless about where they was headin’, the PRESTO trip setup misbehaved, etc. (Did I mention PRESTO more than once? Hmmm ...)
Now, you’re gonna say, “Them things don’t happen every trip!” Yup. You’re right. So, what’s goin’ on? The scuttlebutt with the drivers down here is that part of all that newfangled electronic gear on buses is the CAD/AVL, which tracks exactly where a bus is at any time. Cool, eh? So, why can’t them whippersnappers in Operations tell you what’s shakin’ on 90A while you’re shiverin’ in a shelter on the side of the road? Now if it were me workin’ for GO Transit as a supervisor, I’d do it old school – hop in my Ford pickup and follow that bus to figure out what’s happenin’. In the old days we used to call it “root cause analysis”. Does anyone do that anymore?
I don’t know what else I can offer to help, Ms. Cindy. Daisy May says maybe you could bake your driver one of your world famous cakes, or pies, or somethin’. I mean, our drivers gush over Timmy’s grub, and that ain’t nothin’ like what you or my missus can whip up. Just sayin’.
I hope y’all can work out things up there. It would sure make Daisy May happy, and I won’t be sittin’ at the kitchen table at 2:30 in the mornin’ no more.

Ottawa declares buses as "no vaping" zones - Metrolinx needs to get on this and soon
The City of Ottawa has taken a harder look at its transit bylaw and now says the use of e-cigarettes on city buses and the O-Train is illegal, and that anyone caught “vaping,” as the practice is known, could face fines of up to $5,000.
City Solicitor Rick O’Connor released a statement on the practice late Thursday after being asked by Mayor Jim Watson and other officials to review the legislation following comments from OC Transpo officials earlier this week that seemed to suggest the use of e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine to a smoker without the need to be burned like a traditional cigarette, was permitted.
“Given that the City has received numerous public complaints regarding the use of e-cigarettes on buses and other OC Transpo property, it is apparent that the use of e-cigarettes may interfere with the comfort and convenience of other transit riders and users may therefore be subject to enforcement action, including fines of up to $5,000. I would like to apologize for any confusion that the earlier legal comments may have given,” O’Connor said in the emailed statement.
