ARE YOU READY TO FEEL OLD?

I can't hear you.

I said:

ARE YOU READY TO FEEL OLD?!

On this day, 25 years ago, a 14-year-old me was in my bedroom, lying on my purple shag rug, two feet up on the edge of my bunk bed and doing Grade 9 English homework, when a song came on my favourite radio station, 680 CFTR.

It was the most awesome song I had ever heard, second to "I'm Your Man" by Wham and third to "Love is a Stranger" by Eurythmics. The rest of the night, until my dad hollered at me to get to bed, I waited with my Citizen JTR ghettoblaster at the ready, my fingers hovering over the red record button and black play button, with a Maxell tape all queued up, for the song to play again. I think I called DJ Steve Gregory 80 times that night requesting it and the bastard wouldn't play it.

What was it?

Just bust a move! There are worse songs to have stuck in your head all day. I can live with this one.

Can't believe it's been 25 years. I also found out it's been 30 years since Flashdance was released. What a feeling!

We're turning into our parents Bicky!

Sorry to age you another year, Bicky, but Flashdance was released 31 years ago. Missus and I drove from Newmarket to Cedarbrae Theatre in Scarberia to view it. (How is it I can remember that, but not what I had for dinner last night?)

I'm not turing into any parents I know. I used to, and still do listen to hardcore punk and punk rock as much as I can. Much to the displeasure of the wife and kids at times it seems. At 60 years old I still rock on to the Dead Kennedys :)

I've never heard this song but I hear people referring to it. Mainly because I rarely listened to AM radio.

Meh, it's ok just not my style.

This is still one of my favorites! I remember requesting it constantly from the DJ at our local bar in Scarborough, good times! I was 20 yrs old.

Thanks, Peter. I was going by a factoid from Mirvish Productions. I thought the year was off.

And yes, some days I do feel like I'm turning into my parents! Do cars need to rev their engines for an hour at 1am?!!?! Bah!

What? No Erasure?

(sings)

"..I tried to discover, a little something to make me sweeter, so baby refrain from breaking my heart?..."

No When In Rome?

(sings)

"..I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say, I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be, but if you wait around awhile I'll make you fall for me, I promise, I promise you I will..."

Was that you at The Phoenix on Saturday night? Or on the 3rd floor of Whiskey Saigon Sunday nights?

I don't feel old at all thinking about those days, going back there makes me feel so damn young, full of crap, and less the weight of the world on my shoulders. Those were some good times.

(sings)

"...as you walk on by, will you call my name...?"

Valentino,
I regret, that at 14, my musical tastes weren't all that refined. I don't think I knew of Erasure then. I didn't discover them, or Depeche Mode, or Yazoo, or New Order for that matter, until my late teens/early 20s when I met my boyfriend at that time, who then introduced me to also NIN and KMFDM.

I became a huge Erasure fan and have been to all of their Ontario concerts since 1997.

I am also a huge lover of Prince and his music, too.

I have a massive appreciation for the Beach Boys and Doo Wop. I never did get into the hard stuff like hard rock or metal. I went through a country phase 1996 to 1997 (Hill, Chesney, McGraw, McBride and Krauss) which drove my boyfriend at that time crazy.

And I still, STILL, STILL! love dance/trance/techno and rave. Prodigy is my band.

Hey CJ,

Thanks for sharing.

My musical tastes are all over the board as well, I used to be a crazy concert goer, but have kept it to a few faithfuls as my credit card bills piled up.

Dave Matthews Band is a yearly affair, partially because I know someone in the band, and I always treat U2 as a religious pilgrimage.

Prince eh? Were you at that ACC concert in 2007 where he had the insane drummer, and capped off with a 15 minute rendition of "Purple Rain?" Off the hook awesome!

I saw The Prodigy once at Lollapalooza, the lead singer's cat eye contact lenses freaked me out, and I couldn't get into them any more than that.

Love my classic rock, soundtracks like from Almost Famous are always golden on my list, and I do like the hidden gem singer/songwriters (e.g.Amos Lee, if you've never heard him, give a listen, he's awesome). Being on the spoken word scene in Toronto you come across a lot of indy musicians that wanna back you up sometimes, and you come across some great artists.

Come on, I guess music is a huge part of the commute eh?

T'is and I was at the 2007 and 2004 Prince shows and saw him again in 2011. Tickets are stupid expensive so I've always gone alone.

There is one rock band I regret not having ever seen live and that is AC/DC.

I saw Def Leppard once. Keyword once. Although their song Animal is one I like.

Valentino Assenza said...

Saw AC/DC only once in my life and that was at what is colourfully referred to as SARSstalk.

Sheepishly took the day off sick at my old job to do it.

Didn't know what to expect, all I can say is the acts throughout the day were decent. I was and still am not a fan of Justin Timberlake's music, but he didn't deserve water bottles being thrown at him.

But man, when AC/DC came on the place was transformed. They were AWESOME! Energy was through the roof. Of course headliners The Rolling Stones came on afterwards, and everyone was calling for AC/DC to come back.

Thanks, I feel old now. I am turning 40 in a couple of months and believe this song is as old as it is.

Thanks for the memories.

Such a variety of likes in music. I've gone from Wham! and Duran Duran and other 80s groups to Guns N Roses, Metallica, Queensryche, and Bon Jovi to 50s stuff to country and a lot of in between.

And yes, concert ticket prizes are crazy expensive.

Sadly, I've been to wwo concerts in my life and both were KISS.

But guess what? I'm going to a third concert this summer....Def Leppard and KISS at the Amphitheatre.

Also am thinking about going to Detroit to see the Crue!

You’re welcome Bicky.

Well, CJ, if it’s old you want, it’s old you shall have. I’ll see your 25 years and raise you another quarter century. Yes, May 1964, the Beach Boys’ I Get Around rockin’ from the speakers of a Corvette Sting Ray Coupe belching leaded gasoline fumes from the dual exhaust as it rumbled past me. Old enough? I prefer to think of it as Bob Dylan does - forever young.

C.J. Smith said...

KISS would be awesome. I say we all go!!! Keep me posted.

Bicky said...

KISS is awesome in concert. I saw them and Motley Crue in Denver a couple of years ago.

I have my mom's Beach Boys 45 rmp of I Get Around. Good song! ;)

Anon 9:39 PM here.

Both KISS shows I saw were amazing! One in Buffalo, the next at Copps, on the same Reuninon tour, but about a year apart if I recall.

Looking forward to seeing them in August. Grass area seating is only $45.
