I don't know about respecting them, but at least they are showing some consideration for others.

For what it's worth, not that long ago a CSA made an anti-footriding announcement and specifically included people who lift the cushions up first.

My CSA once told us not to footride, especially on that slushy day, but if you REALLY needed to, lifting up the cushions was ok.

Nope, not offensive so long as the train is empty.
