A GO gift card says I love you

I'm sure, somewhere, in some marriage, this is the most amazing gift ever.
In mine, it's worthy of a nut punch.

From GO Transit's Facebook
Take the load off your loved one’s commuting costs and buy them a GO Gift Card for Valentine’s Day: http://ow.ly/8PSMl

I'm a stickler for grammar. You can't call a loved one (singular) "them" (plural). It's him or her.

The CSA on yesterday's ride in gave the announcement about it. I give her credit for getting through it without laughing.

But really, how romantic. *sarcasm*

You can only load up to $250 on it. That won't even cover a month once the new fare hike kicks in.

They did the same crap before Xmas too. Like someone really really really wants that in their stocking.

Or in this case, a big heart shaped box.

As for "them" people are using the third person plural because English doesn't have a neutral third person singular. And no matter how much you try to remind people, they aren't gonna change.

"English doesn't have a neutral third person singular"
Yes it does: "it".

@TomW..if I referred to my loved one as "it", I'd get a nut punch!!

As for GO and Valentines...I'm pretty sure that would be grounds for divorce!!! "Here honey, I got you your GO Train pass for the month, see how much I love you?!? I know you would have gotten it anyway, but still ;)"

Nothing says "I love you" like sending someone off to work. Not.

@Tom: Sorry, I meant a third person singular, that implies a person, not an object.

A lot of other languages have a "rule" stating that if gender is not known, or if the sentence is constructed in this way, the masculine form of the third person singular is used.

As Margaret Atwood once said, enough with the he/she/it business. Put "he", "she" and "it" together and just call it "sh!t".
