That happens on all coach cloth seats. It's not just shoes. It's dirt, dust, people in work clothes, food, dead skin cells, it all breaks down and ends up stuck in those seats, not to mention fibres in the seat breaking down, etc. Give a good smack to any cloth seat and you can see for yourself.

For the last 2 days on the LSW 4:30 train amazingly the CSR has been emphatically saying "PLEASE keep your feet off the seats" before the Quiet Zone reminder - must be a fan of your site :).
